Thoughts this Sabbath day

I haven’t just sat down and written in a long time…so with both boys asleep, hubby off home teaching and Lion House Rolls rising, there isn’t a better time than now.
My recent posts have been of the “update” nature, and while this post wasn’t inspired to do that, there have been many updates in our house lately.  Namely, we sold our black lab, Cougar, yesterday.  He has been trained to be a hunting dog and unfortunately his life lately has consisted of going back and forth between his inside kennel and outside kennel, so he has been running off on us recently.  So his new home is with Rocky Mountain Roosters—the place where the boys go hunting.  So Taylor and my dad will be able to hunt with him whenever they go and see him, so it’s the best of both worlds. And yes, we plan to get a new dog, but a MUCH smaller dog that can be inside and fun for the boys.
Next, we finally sold my XTerra (Hallelujah!) and drum roll please…bought a MINIVAN! Ha! I am seriously SO excited about it! It’s just more practical for us and allows room to grow our family.  It will be delivered this Thursday, and let me tell you, Thursday can’t come soon enough!! A HUGE shout out to my dad for letting me drive his truck while we were selling my car on the dealers lot—having a vehicle for me made the last 10 weeks bearable!  So thank you!
And on to the point of this post…last night was the adult session of our Stake Conference.  We were privileged to have a general authority in attendance.  He shared a story that just resonated with me and I hope to share it adequately here.  His daughter had shared a story (I assume it was through a blog) and it started off by saying she was at the store and saw some jewelry boxes -- the ones that when you open there is a ballerina twirling with music playing.  There were two sizes -- big and small -- and I believe you could get some that even had a lock and key to go with it.  She has two girls and thought she would grab the two big ones and give them as Christmas gifts.  As she was checking out she knew how excited her girls were going to be about these and then she remembered that their cousin had a birthday party coming up and that she would grab the smaller jewelry box as the gift.  Later that night, as the girls were going to bed, she told them that she picked up a gift for their cousin.  They asked what it was, and she told them and showed it to them.  The older daughter, who was 4 years old, just broke out into tears when she saw it.  The mother said that her daughter was inconsolable and crying for thirty minutes.  (I could relate to that with a 4 year old myself!) The reason for her tears was because she wanted one too.  Her mother, knowing that she already bought the bigger one for her daughter, told her that maybe she would be getting a better one for her birthday or Christmas.  But her daughter said, "But that one is perfect."
The mother continued in her story by saying that that experience taught her that sometimes we want something so bad and think that is what we want, when in reality our Father in Heaven may have something bigger and better in store for us.
This sister, in particular, really wants a house.  And in her story she said after this experience with her daughter, "I really want a house, but instead I have a child with cancer (Her son). Perhaps there is something better in store for me."
That story was so powerful to me that I really wanted to record it.  The point of the story was that we do not always know what is ahead for us, and what will happen or when something will happen.  But I have faith in my Savior that He knows what is best for me and He will bless me more than I can wish or conjure up.  And like the mother in the story, she may or may not get a house, she may or may not get what she thinks is perfect, but I believe and know that she will get what is absolutely perfect and best for her and her family through exercising faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ, and that knowledge gives me great hope.  I am grateful that Christ knows me and wants the best for us -- if we endure and trust in Him!
Also tied into this thought is my own personal experience this past week.  It seemed like in the space of a short time, I ran into multiple people that I haven't seen in a long time and the typical question came up of "What's new?" Or "What do you do?"  Again, it's such a simple question, but I felt like my answer was so inadequate, so meager.  I felt like I had nothing profound or exciting to say, that as I thought about my days and what I do, all I could say was, "I'm just a mom." I couldn't say that I was the president of the PTA, or running marathons, or teaching dance, or running a dance studio.  I felt like I had no extraordinary talents to share.  All I could think about was the tasks I had to do as "the mom" -- the grocery trips, the constant task of feeding our boys throughout the day and the follow-up need to clean those meals up, and the laundry, and the cleaning ... etc... everything that goes into "being the mom." I had my "vent session" one night, knowing full-well that I just needed to talk about it and I'd be better by morning.  I was better by morning, but it was still on my mind.  I read my scriptures, listened to uplifting music, and read the Ensign -- all with this topic on my mind.  I felt renewed peace and strength.   I also spoke to some good friends about it.  One could relate and that always helps to know you're not the only one feeling like that.  And then another friend, who after thinking about this, said to me, "You know, I think that's Satan's way of getting to us." And she was absolutely right.  I know the divine role of motherhood, and I am so grateful to be a mom.  It is AMAZING how if I look for it and ask for the help from Christ, he has blessed me with numerous opportunities to feel his love and strength in regards to my feelings on this.  Just today, as I was in the halls at church trying to get Beau asleep, I came across this phrase that gave me such purpose in my role as a mother -- "dedicated to our marriage, family, and home." Simple, right? but the word "dedicated" is so powerful and strikes such thoughts of action in my mind.
I am grateful to be a mother, I know that growing my family is the phase of life I am in right now and with that comes spit up, crying, some sleepless nights, tantrums, and dirty diapers.  But also, the sweet moments come as well, just today, I was holding Beau and Isaac came up and I kissed Isaac's cheek, then I kissed Beau's cheek, and Isaac kissed Beau and Isaac kissed my cheek and in that moment, Isaac wrapped his arms around Beau and me and said "I love my family." And then went over to Taylor and gave him a big kiss, too.  Those are special moments, and I am grateful to be a mom.  Next time I am asked what I do, instead of saying, "I'm just a mom."  I will say, "I AM a mother!"

Annual Girls Trip: Las Vegas Style

From Friday, Oct. 7 to Monday, Oct. 10, my mother, grandmother, sister and I traveled to Las Vegas, NV for a weekend of girls-only fun, food, shows, and shopping! We stayed at the beautiful Wynn hotel and ate some of the best meals of my life.  I love our girls trips and am SO grateful to my husband, dad and friends for helping with the boys while I was away! This was our first night at dinner, the restaurant was known for the meatballs and man were they yummy!!!

What's funny about this picture is that Taylor and I went to Las Vegas for our honeymoon almost six years ago and we have a picture of the two of us in the exact same location, so I really wanted to take another one there.  My sister, Nana, and myself
The first night there, we saw Garth Brooks.  It was really good, and I loved going to it, but I have to say my 'favorite of favorite parts' was looking over at my mom during the performance and her having the largest permi-grin on her face! (This was her second time seeing Garth, the first time was just four months ago!)
My sister and I happened to match the next night... we thought it was funny.
The following night we went to Le Reve, a Cirque de Soileu show.  That was fun as well!

And this last picture was taken at the hotel right before we went to the airport.

We had a GREAT trip, with great company, great food, and great entertainment & shopping!! Thanks again Mom and Dad for letting us do this and thanks Taylor for being so patient and willing to take care of home while I was away!

Isaac turns FOUR!

Isaac turned four on October 6.  Every year it seems so crazy to think about how old he is getting.  But, we drew out his birthday for as much as possible--it started with his birthday party invites we did three weeks early and had on the fridge until we handed them out (we had a Cowboy themed party, so I made "cowboy boots" with a magnet on the back that said 'Come join us for a rowdy good time at Isaac's birthday party.... Isaac's Round-Up!')  Then all the birthday party details started a week before the actual party and then we celebrated his birthday for three days.  Yes, crazy, I know.  It's all about making a big deal for birthdays in this house.

So, we started with a family dinner and party on Tuesday night. I had this idea to get Isaac a power wheel Jeep (since both Taylor and I wanted one growing up but never got one, so we are living vicariously through our kids...haha... no seriously, both Taylor and I have driven it!) So my parents did not disappoint and got Isaac his very own Jeep...
The picture is all stretched weird, but you get the idea.  You see...we live in a wonderful neighborhood, with lots of kids, and we love it.  So this Jeep has been so fun for the kids so far.  And Isaac just thinks it is THE coolest thing! Thanks again Nana & Papa! And, I'm pretty sure Isaac included his Jeep in his prayers for a week after... :)

Wednesday: the FRIEND party.  Now, you may think I am crazy, but I will explain.  He had 15 friends over his party.  I know, I know.  But I don't have bad memories of it, so I can't say that I wouldn't do it again. :) Isaac is so into friends right now -- and with just the kids in our neighborhood, there were 10 already! So what were 5 more ...?? :) Again, it was a cowboy theme, and don't worry, I did not go all professional on the decorations. The front door said "Welcome to Isaac's Round-Up"

Then we had four "activities" that were cowboy themed.  Each kid made their own Trail Mix to take home in their goodie bag.
My sweet friend let me borrow her horse saddle that we used as the "Cowboy and Cowgirl photo booth." Each kid wore a bandanna that had a "sheriff pin" on it and a cowboy hat and had their picture taken.  I thought the beautiful mountains in the background was a good backdrop. :)
The classic "pin the tail on the horse" ... don't you laugh at my horse-drawing-abilities! Ha!
And then "Rope the Steer" which another sweet friend let me borrow her rocking horse and then the kids threw hula hoops at it to "rope it."
These were the "goodie bags" -- and yes, I cut out each one of those sheriff badges and made them so each of them could "pin" theirs on.  ...Remember, 15 kids??? :)
Last year, I made a homemade pizza and cupcakes on top of all the games and that was just too much.  So this year I decided we would just do something for the "happy birthday" song part.  Initially I was going to make cupcakes, but last year they made a huge mess (which is expected) but most kids just liked the frosting off the top and that was it.  So, I decided to make "brownie pops." They were fun and easy to make and I got this clever idea of how to present them while laying in bed one night.  So, in case you don't get it, going with the cowboy theme, the "boom", "pow" and "bam" are like targets exploding after shooting at them and the brownie pops are the "explosions." I don't know how they tasted...I never ate one...but I liked how it turned it!
A close up of the brownie pops
Here were the cowboy photo booth pictures of Isaac.  I love this one:
And a sweet smile from the birthday boy.
Isaac LOVED being sung to.  He got this demeanor about him that was just too funny.
And, presents... he loved opening them, and so did everyone else!

Then, THURSDAY (his actual birthday) we woke up opened gifts from us to him and had his breakfast of choice (homemade pancakes) on the "special red plate" and then he went to preschool and wanted to take donuts with sprinkles as his treat.  Again, they sang to him and he loved that.  We met up with Taylor for lunch since Taylor had to work late and then we came home and I made Isaac take a nap because he was EXHAUSTED.  Later that night we kept with tradition, and went to Red Robin.  Initially it was just going to be us and my mom but we were lucky enough to meet up with Emily Alley and her sister-in-laws Julie and Anna.  It was WONDERFUL! We love them! And Heather and Tyson came as well (my dad was out of town and Taylor had to work).  Again, they sang to Isaac and can you see a similarity between this picture and the one above??
The gang (minus Heather and Tyson)
And that is how we celebrated Isaac turning 4! We sure love you Isaac!

Updated pictures of the boys!

These are just random pictures of Isaac and Beau. Just a typical day in the life of two boys.  Isaac right before he left for preschool... p.s. I love that I can carpool with friends in our neighborhood to preschool!
And, as long as we're taking pictures, we might as well throw in some crazy faces of Isaac... which I LOVE!

The last class of the month at preschool is known as "show-and-share" where the parents can come watch for 15 minutes.  Well, all the kids in the class of 5 go to our church and all us moms are good friends and we all have a baby of some sort.  So, being one that loves tradition and hates the meal of lunch, thought it would be fun to go over to McDonald's after show-and-share and get lunch and let the kids play while we chatted.... and it proved to be great! Here are four of the five kids (the other little boy couldn't make it)...
And I snapped this cute picture of Beau....I love it!
I love my boys!

My 5k MUD RUN!

On September 24 I participated in a 5k Mud Run with friends from our neighborhood.  It was a lot of fun!! But not going to lie, leading up to the race and especially the night before, I was getting a little nervous!! I thought it would be less running than it was and more obstacles, but there was quite a bit of running! It was great how it all worked out, though.  So here we are "before" the mud! We all live in the same neighborhood and are all good friends.

This is the last of the last mud holes and of course, my shoe came off.  It was actually pretty funny, so I finished with shoe in hand.

Amie, Leslie, Emily and myself.... you may think we don't look too muddy, but 1) you should see our backside and 2) just wait until the next picture....
We went back to wait for the other two girls to finish and as they approached, they tackled us in the mud and I'm pretty sure I was at the bottom of the dog-pile! Ha, it was the best part of the run!

All covered in mud and smiling! It was fun to do with good friends!!
